What it is

The STPM32 is an ST metering chip ("ASSP") that does the hard part of energy measurement for you. Give it a voltage signal and a current signal from the mains, and it returns calibrated RMS voltage, RMS current, active, reactive and apparent power and energy over SPI or UART. Your microcontroller just reads numbers; it does no DSP and no calibration maths.

This is the single-phase member of the family: one voltage channel and one current channel. The STPM33 and STPM34 add channels for split-phase and poly-phase systems and come in a larger QFN32 package.

What it measures

  • RMS and instantaneous voltage and current
  • Instantaneous and average active power; fundamental and wideband energy; dual-mode apparent energy
  • Overvoltage and undervoltage detection
  • Overcurrent detection with a programmable threshold

Current sensors it works with

Shunt resistor, current transformer, or Rogowski coil. The programmable gain on the current channel is what lets one chip cover all three.

Design notes before you order

  • This is a QFN-24, 4 × 4 mm, 0.5 mm pitch with a thermal pad. It will not go on a breadboard or in a socket. You need a PCB and reflow, hot air or a good stencil-and-skillet setup.
  • It needs a 16 MHz crystal and a clean 3.3 V rail.
  • The current and voltage dividers must be designed for your mains and sensor; accuracy comes from that front end as much as from the chip.
  • If you want to try the chip before designing a board, start with the EVALSTPM32 evaluation board, which is a working class 0.2 meter with the shunt and dividers already done.

Typical uses

  • Prepaid and smart electricity meters
  • Submetering for estates, shops and shared buildings
  • Energy logging in inverter, solar and generator systems
  • Power quality monitoring, including sag and overcurrent detection

Pre-order: register your interest

We do not hold this part in Nigeria yet. We are listing it to find out how many people actually need it before we commit to an order. Nothing is charged and no order is placed right now.

Lead time once we order is 2 to 4 weeks from our distributor, plus clearing.

Tell us how many you want and we will come back to you with a firm price and date:

If enough people ask for it, we stock it. If you need it urgently, say so and we can quote it as a one-off import.

Sold as a single IC. Our distributor supplies it on tape and reel in multiples of 20, so we order in 20s and hold the balance.
